Community access program for swimming

Did you know? Surrey Park Swimming donates a portion of every swim lesson undertaken at Aqualink Box Hill through our learn to swim program to our CAPS fund.

Supporting our community

Surrey Park Swimming created our Community Access Program for Swimming out of our vision as a not for profit to ensure everyone in our community has access to swimming and water safety education. Starting as a donation based scheme in 2014, we subsidised beginner swimming lessons to newly arrived migrants, refugees, asylum seekers, culturally and linguistically diverse communities, at risk teenage mothers, students with a disability, and those experiencing financial hardship. We also use this to provide free water safety talks to local kindergartens, child care centres and schools. By 2021 we had subsidised over 350 individuals of all ages to access beginner swimming lessons and conducted over 40 water safety talks at our local preschools and primary schools.

Today, we continue to assist our local community through subsidised adult learn to swim programs, learn to swim programs for children, and free water safety talks. By assisting in our learn to swim programs, you are helping to assist those families who are vulnerable or struggling financially to access water safety and swimming education, as well as our local schools, kinders and childcare centres to access more information to stay safer around water.

Where is our funding used?

Refugee, asylum seeker, and culturally and linguistically diverse beginner swimming programs.

Our aim is to reduce drowning or near drowning rates within this demographic. We collaborate with migrant settlement services and organisations who work with culturally and linguistically diverse communities to reach members of our community who are unable to afford or access swimming lessons for various reasons. Our adult group learn to swim classes target beginners and aim to teach basic strokes, survival techniques and water safety that will not only assist them, but also their family, friends, and wider community. Our programs for children aim to introduce them to the fundamentals of swimming so they can catch up to their peers and stay safer around water. Funding from our CAPS program has allowed Surrey Park Swimming to provide free or heavily subsidised programs to these swimmers.

Free preschool and primary school water safety talks

At Surrey Park Swimming we work hard to ensure everyone in our local communities have access to water safety education. We developed an interactive water safety talk that is delivered free of charge to local childcare centres, kindergartens, and primary schools. Our talks cover safety at the beach, at home, inland water ways and your local pool, with take home messages for kids and adults alike. Feedback from this program has been overwhelmingly positive.

Financial hardship

Where possible, families and community groups experiencing financial hardship are supported who would otherwise not have access to swim lessons.
