Children’s swimming lessons

Swimming isn’t optional - it’s an essential skill for life.

Like you, our aim is to teach your child to swim independently, feel safe and confident in water and develop the awareness to make safe choices, what to do if they ever find themselves in trouble, and how to respond safely if someone else needs help.

We achieve this by offering a comprehensive learn to swim program that is technique focussed, coupled with water safety messaging and skills all delivered in a fun, and nurturing environment.
Our programs flow seamlessly into the Surrey Park Swimming Club squad programs.

About children's swimming lessons

Surrey Park Swimming focuses on teaching technique and development of all strokes from our first level, ensuring those essential survival strokes and skills are tackled from day one, compared to other swimming programs that only focus on freestyle initially. We care about our local families and community and have been the center for swimming education and club swimming in the City of Whitehorse for over 120 years.

Junior Squads

This is the final step in your learn to swim journey. This is for swimmers who have learnt how to swim all four strokes and are ready to progress on to be a compentent swimmer, and thus safer in the water. From this squad, your child can continue to progress into our competitive state and national club program or to our Fitness squad that complements other sports and assists with injury prevention.

Squad progression is ability based. Our qualified coach will notify you when you are ready for advancement to other squads and can update you on your current progress.

Fitness Squad

This squad is designed for swimmers who still enjoy swimming as a sport but do not wish to swim competitively or keep up with the training commitments of competitive squads. This squad aims to continue stroke correction while working on endurance, stamina and strength.

This squad is ideal for cross-training for other sports; as swimming is a low-impact total body workout and will improve cardivascular fitness, range of motion and muscle strength to improve performance, and assist with injury recovery and prevention.

Squad progression to other squads is based on swimmers ability, interests and coaches recommendations.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to commonly asked questions about our swim lessons and programs.

If your child has never swum before and cannot float on their back independently, they should be booked straight into level 1. If you believe they will be level 2 or higher based on the level descriptions, your child will need to complete a Level Check with one of our Lead Instructors prior to booking. These can be booked with our reception team by filling in an enquiry form

Our Level 1 class is the ideal class for you, this class teaches kids the basics of swimming from scratch

Children all learn at different rates. Our Lead instructors and swim school coordinators actively monitor any child who has been at their level for an extended period to ensure they continue to progress at a steady rate. If you are at all concerned with your child’s progress please speak with the Lead Instructor on pool deck at your lesson
Our app has the skills required for their current level and what still needs to be achieved. This is located under accounts, student, evaluation, and select their current program/level

The Victorian Water Safety Certificate is a program designed by Life Saving Victoria in conjunction with the Victorian Department of Education to establish a minimum baseline or safety net for water safety. Our program exceeds this minimum requirement and aims to ensure all students are competent swimmers.

We recommend that children should progress through to Junior Squad before stopping their learn to swim journey. Prior to this your child is learning the techniques of swimming and essential water safety skills. We believe for a child to be safer in water they need to be a competent swimmer, where they can swim continuously for long periods even when they are tired, and where they are confident enough in their swimming that they won’t panic if facing an unexpected situation in the water.
