Preschool swimming levels

Progression through our preschool swimming levels is ability based. Once kids reach school age, they transition across to the equivalent school age class.

Group

Pre Level 1

For beginners who are:

  • New to swimming
  • Nervous putting their head underwater
  • Confident beginners learning basic freestyle

Level progression is ability based. Each skill has a star for introduction, development, and mastery. Once all 10 criteria are achieved, your child will move to the next level. When starting school, kids move to the equivalent school age level (e.g. Level 1).

If this is your child’s first ever lesson, we recommend one adult wears their bathers incase they need to sit on the pool edge to provide your child with some extra support for the first lesson or two.

Frequently asked questions

Answers to commonly asked questions about our swim lessons and programs.

Our Pre Level 1 class is the ideal class for you, this class teaches kids the basics of swimming from scratch. If it is their first lesson, kids may need you sitting on the pool deck in your bathers for the first class while they get to know their teacher.

Practise putting goggles on. Ask the child to hold goggles on their eyes while you pull the strap over. Avoid pulling hair where possible as this may make kids dislike goggles. You can also practise pouring a small trickle of water gently over their face during bath time, encouraging blinking, blowing birthday candles with their mouth and blowing into a tissue or humming for nose bubbles. Getting water in their goggles or water up their nose during a lesson is usually what discourages them. A splash party in the bath will help them get used to unexpected splashes that can happen if they are swimming behind another class member. Laugh and smile with them during these experiences to make them fun.

Each location has a different depth pool. Our Box Hill location has a learners pool where 3 year olds can stand. If space permits, the teachers may move to a deeper lane in this pool to practise some treading water. Any pool lane where your child is unable to touch the ground will have platforms the children can stand on for rest periods.
Children all learn at different rates. Our Lead instructors and swim school coordinators actively monitor any child who has been at their level for an extended period to ensure they continue to progress at a steady rate. If you are at all concerned with your child’s progress please speak with the Lead Instructor on pool deck at your lesson.

Our app has the skills required for their current level and what still needs to be achieved. This is located under accounts, student, evaluation, and select their current program/level
