Michael is a Senior Coach at Surrey Park, where he is the primary coach of the Open Performance, State Senior, and State Target squads. He started with Surrey Park as a Learn to Swim teacher in 2017 and has been part of the club’s coaching team since 2018.
Michael began his coaching journey with the State Target squad and quickly progressed to working with senior athletes, becoming a full-time coach with the Open squad in 2019. Since then, he has played a key role in expanding squad numbers and significantly increasing the club’s state and national qualifiers. His work led to the creation of the Open Performance squad, which in 2025 celebrated several athletes qualifying for the Australian Trials for the first time.
- Open Performance Squad – Athletes aged 18+ who are nationally qualified and training to compete at National Trials level.
- State Senior Squad – Athletes aged 16+ who are state qualified and training to compete at a national level.
- State Target Squad – Athletes aged 13–16+ who are developing towards State Championship qualification.
Michael’s athletes have achieved success across both in pool and open water swimming. A highlight came when an athlete won the 10km at the Australian Open Water Championships, earning him selection as a coach on the Open Water Age Flippers Camp in 2025. Building on this, he was also appointed Lead Coach for the Victorian Open Water Pathways Program in 2025.
As a coach, Michael is passionate about fostering an environment that is fun, supportive, and conducive to hard work, learning, and growth, both as athletes and as people. His journey from Learn to Swim through to senior coaching reflects his belief in long-term athlete development and his commitment to creating pathways for swimmers to succeed at every level.
