Squad Pathways

Junior Squad

Introduction of competitive aspects of all 4 strokes with a high skill component.

  • Learning correct training protocol
  • Understand the pace clock
  • Aerobic / Endurance training principles
  • Introduction to competitive racing – club nights/carnivals
  • Promotion will be determined via skill development and attitude of swimmer
  • Swimmers will only be promoted to the next level on the coach’s advice.
  • Must be a “swimmer” member of Surrey Park Swimming Club.

 

  • Junior Squads
    • Junior Blue – 2 Sessions per week
    • Junior Green – 3 Sessions per week
    • Junior Gold – 4 Sessions per week

State Development Squad

Coach: Tom Crabb

  • Minimum 4 sessions required; commitment required depends on swimmers’s age (refer training continuum)
  • Competitive squad – Swimming Victoria meets – swimmers should have goals orientated towards attaining State qualifying times
  • Aerobic / Endurance training principles
  • One gym session per week (body awareness/cardio training)
  • Swimmers will only be promoted to next level at coach’s discretion
  • Must be a “swimmer” member of Surrey Park Swimming Club.

Age High Performance Squad

Coach: Pat Fisher

  • Swimmers are aged 11-12 years and over
  • Similar outline to Open High Performance – to prepare swimmers for transition to Open High Performance Squad
  • Commitment to the program/sessions attended
  • 5 – 8 sessions per week required depending on age
  • Includes Core / Yoga session in gym
  • Must be a “swimmer” member of Surrey Park Swimming Club.

Senior State Squad

Coach: Tom Crabb

  • Swimmers are aged 14 years and over
  • A commitment to attend 4 sessions/week is required
  • The Senior State Squad is for swimmers who still enjoy the rigors of competitive swimming but don’t want to commit to the session numbers of the Open High Performance squad
  • This squad allows for swimmers who are at university or completing year 12 to train at a reduced load. It is also suitable for triathletes / surf swimmers etc…
  • The pool sessions will be anaerobic based to develop speed and strength.
  • Certain sessions will be conducted as joint sessions with the Open High Performance squads
  • Attendance at afternoon sessions with Open High Performance is at coach’s discretion
  • Must be a “swimmer” member of Surrey Park Swimming Club.

Open High Performance Squad

Coach: Ian Pope

  • Swimmers are aged 14 years and over.
  • Dry land training and its effective use for improvement in performance
  • Psychological strategies – goal setting, etc
  • Nutrition
  • The different energy systems and why we need to train them
  • How to behave and train like an elite swimmer
  • Injury prevention and management strategies
  • Exposure to National / International level competition.
  • Must be a “swimmer” member of Surrey Park Swimming Club.

Session and Commitment Progression

  • 10 / Under – 3 to 4 sessions per week including stretching
  • 11 years – 4 sessions per week including core strength
  • 12 years – 5 to 6 sessions per week including core strength
  • 13 years – 6 to 7 sessions per week including 1 gym  – 1 box/bike/skip
  • 14 years – 7 to 8 sessions per week including 2 gym – 1 box/bike/skip
  • 15 years – 8 to 9 sessions per week including 2 gym – 1 box/bike/skip
  • 16 and over – 9 sessions per week including 2-3 gym – 1 box/bike/skip

In order for your children to receive their coach’s full attention, parents of children in the above squads are advised not to be on pool deck during training sessions. If you wish to speak to your child’s coach, please make an appointment with the respective coach or through Surrey Park reception

 JOINING SURREY PARK SWIMMING

All swimmers in Surrey Park’s competitive squads (Junior Squad upwards) are required to join as a swimmer member with Swimming Victoria. This involves completing a membership form and payment of an annual membership fee (as is the case for other sports). The majority of the membership fee collected is retained by Swimming Victoria; it includes necessary insurance whilst training, competing and participating in other Surrey Park activities.
